How Much Does the Everest Base Camp Trek Cost? A Real Breakdown
Package prices vary widely because operators bundle very different things. Here's what's actually being paid for, permit by permit.
The fixed costs everyone pays
Permit requirements are time-sensitive. Current Nepal Tourism Board guidance lists Everest Base Camp among routes requiring a licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card, while Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality separately operates a Trek Card. The Sagarmatha National Park entry fee and local Trek Card fee are different charges; ask for a dated breakdown in your quote and verify the current rules before departure.
What a package price is actually covering
Beyond permits, the bulk of a package price covers: round-trip Lukla flights (among the more expensive short domestic flights in the world, given the short, weather-sensitive runway and limited seasonal capacity), a licensed guide's daily fee, porter wages and their own permit and insurance costs, and teahouse lodging plus three meals a day for the duration of the trek. Lodging itself is often nominally cheap or free at each teahouse on the assumption that trekkers eat their meals there — the meal cost, not the room, is where most of a teahouse's revenue actually comes from, which is worth knowing if you're ever tempted to bring your own food to save money on a package trek.
What's typically excluded
International airfare to Kathmandu, the Nepal tourist visa fee (paid on arrival), personal trekking gear, travel and evacuation insurance, alcoholic drinks and hot showers at higher-altitude lodges (both commonly charged per use above Namche, since fuel has to be carried or burned locally), and tips for guides and porters are standard exclusions across most operators, regardless of how "all-inclusive" the package is marketed. A package quote that appears unusually cheap relative to competitors is worth checking carefully for which of these it's actually covering.
