Best Time to Trek Everest Base Camp: A Season-by-Season Guide
Late September–November and March–May are the two stable windows. Outside them, you're trading clear views for cold, cloud, or crowds — sometimes deliberately.
Autumn (late September – November)
The most popular season, for good reason: post-monsoon skies are at their clearest, temperatures are cold but manageable, and trails are in their best condition after the monsoon rains. This is also peak season — Namche and Tengboche's teahouses fill up, and Lukla flights get booked well in advance. If you want the most reliable weather and don't mind sharing the trail, this is the safest choice.
Spring (March – May)
The second stable window, and the season Everest expedition teams themselves use for summit attempts, which tells you something about its reliability. Rhododendrons bloom through the lower Khumbu in April, adding color the autumn trek doesn't have. Afternoon cloud builds more than in autumn, which can obscure summit views later in the day — plan viewpoint climbs (Kala Patthar, Gokyo Ri) for early morning regardless of season, but especially in spring.
Winter (December – February)
Genuinely cold — overnight temperatures at altitude regularly drop to -15°C to -20°C or lower at Gorak Shep — but skies are often the clearest of the year and trails are close to empty. This is a real option for well-prepared, cold-tolerant trekkers, not a season to attempt casually; teahouse heating is limited to a single dining-room stove, and some higher lodges close entirely.
Monsoon (June – August)
The season to avoid for Everest Base Camp specifically: persistent cloud cover blocks the mountain views that are most of the point of this particular trek, lower trails become muddy and leech-heavy, and Lukla flights face frequent weather delays. Some trekkers do choose this window deliberately for near-empty trails and lush lower-valley scenery, accepting that summit views are unlikely — that's a legitimate trade-off, just not the default choice.
