A region shaped by one event
Modern Khumbu trekking tourism traces directly back to the first ascent of Everest in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary — an event that, combined with Hillary's decades of subsequent work through the Himalayan Trust funding schools and hospitals in the region, shaped both the infrastructure and the international profile the Khumbu has today.

Namche Bazaar's Saturday market, the Hillary Suspension Bridge below Namche, Tengboche's monastery framed against Everest and Lhotse — the route accumulates its own set of fixed points that every trekker who's done it recognizes, regardless of which exact itinerary they followed.
The naming of Everest
The mountain has three names in regular use, reflecting the three cultures with a claim to it: Sagarmatha in Nepali, Chomolungma (or Qomolangma) in Tibetan — traditionally translated as "Goddess Mother of the World" — and Everest, the English name given in 1865 by the Royal Geographical Society after Sir George Everest, a former Surveyor General of India who had no direct connection to the mountain himself and reportedly disliked the honor. All three names are still used today, often depending on who's speaking and in what context.
How tall, exactly
Nepal and China jointly announced a revised official height of 8,848.86m in December 2020, following a fresh survey — a small but symbolically significant update from the 8,848m figure that had stood since a 1955 Indian survey, and a resolution of a long-standing discrepancy between Nepali and Chinese measurements that had used different methods for calculating snow-cap versus rock height.
