Responsible Travel in the Khumbu

A responsible trek treats the Khumbu as a living home and protected landscape, not only as a backdrop for a personal challenge.

Respect communities

Ask before photographing people or entering religious spaces. Walk around mani walls and chortens in the customary direction, follow local instructions, and pay fairly for services rather than treating hospitality as an entitlement.

Reduce trail impact

Carry reusable water and a small waste bag, avoid single-use packaging where practical, use established paths and toilets, and do not remove stones, plants, fossils, prayer flags, or other objects from the landscape.

Staff welfare questions

Before booking, ask how porter loads, insurance, equipment, wages, accommodation, emergency evacuation, and tipping are handled. A responsible operator should be willing to answer clearly and in writing.

Do not overpromise impact

Environmental and community projects should name partners, locations, dates, funding, and evidence. We will keep claims modest until those details can be published and checked.
